Indulgence

By: Faye Pecaoco

When you are writing about food, you can take any direction you like if you are given the freedom to choose the topic on your own. The history of food, or some particular meal; ethnic cuisines and eating habits all over the world; restaurant business; harmful food; healthy food; restaurant review; recipes, and on, and on, and on… Choose something close to you; something you are genuinely interested in and can tell a lot about or would like to learn more while researching.

The type of an essay also plays an important role. If you need to write a descriptive or narrative essay, you’d probably choose to write about eating habits and traditions on Bali, or the development of the Russian cuisine for instance. Compare and contrast essay would presuppose comparing Japanese and Korean cuisines. In the process essay you would probably describe some recipe using its step-by-step explanation. While argumentative or persuasive essay would like to touch upon such significant issues as junk food, fast-food restaurants and obesity problem, or genetically modified organisms used in products.

An important thing for your essay on food is your language. You can write in simple dry words or use juicy and florid expressions. This you can choose after at least approximate evaluation of your audience and their preferences. It is also an important thing to consider while choosing the topic by the way. So before you start writing about food, think if someone would like to read the things you are going to write or are you going to do it just for the hell of it?

FOOD

Food is very essential to our health. It provides us with many nutrients that can enable us to do our everyday tasks. It may be sweet, sour, spicy or salty but still it is very important. Delicious or not. Like us people, food is like a family. They have their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and even brothers and sisters. Sometimes it may look boring, dull or even disgusting but taking the risk won’t matter, right? Because it’ll be another memory you can’t forget.  Food is also another way for socializing or simply for bonding. It unites us. It helps us be more sociable or more open to one another. Surprising as it is. How a simple thing like food could have a lot more than what we though it would be. Before, we just thought of it as something to eat. Something that would make us fat. But as we reflect on it further we may find a lot more about it that may surprise us. Things that we haven’t realized yet. Memories that we thought didn’t matter but did. Food is almost part of every good memory we can think of. First dates, reunions, weddings. Food is always there. This post may seem like some scientific explanation of what food is at first but as you read it further you were in for a more delectable surprise. And that’s just how food is. Something that’s like a mystery.

                                                          FOOD

Food is one of our basic needs. We need food to survive. We need food to be healthy. The foods that we eat affect how we feel. Like chocolates, for example. Chocolates make us hyper. We all have our own favorite foods. My favorite food is sweets. I really love eating sweets. Sweet foods, especially chocolates, gives me energy and also serves as comfort whenever I feel down. Another sweet food is ice cream. My favorite flavor is cookies ‘n’ cream. It is very delicious. Sweet foods are my desserts. I always have sweet food as dessert after dinner. But I have limitations on eating sweet foods because I easily get sore throat, I still love them. An d I really can’t live without sweets.

Aside from sweet foods, there are other types of food that also give us energy. These are the rice, bread, pasta and other foods that belong in the carbohydrates. These foods give more energy than sweet foods.

Fruits and vegetables gives us nutrients to make our bodies healthy and to prevent sickness. These are really good for the body. That is why we should eat fruits and vegetables everyday to have a healthy body. Meat, chicken, and fish gives us nutrients also.

If other types of food gives us energy and nutrients, dairy products like milk, makes our bones stronger. Milk gives us calcium that makes our bones stronger and healthier.

When we eat, we should always balance the foods that we eat. Too much sweets and fats makes us sick. And we should also take care of our bodies to prevent illness.

FOOD: Friend or Foe?

From: Ella Beatriz G. Saga (anrilamusic)

                                            FOOD: friend or foe?

Apart from being a means to sustain life, food also provides pleasure. People have certain food preferences, including those they consider their favorites. These so-called “favorites” can be viewed as “comfort food” because eating them makes a person feel better. This shows that food can also have a psychological effect on the consumer. We may have heard of people who say that whenever they are feeling low, they just help themselves to a handful of chocolate bars and then they are in a more positive mood. We may have heard of “emotional” eating, one in which a person resorts to overeating as a way of coping with his or her problems.
But these are not the only factors that shape people’s food choices. The type of food we eat is also influences by other factors based on our way of life, ethnic grouping, social status, religious beliefs, financial standing in the community, and even geographical location, among others. For instance, Muslims around the world prefer to eat lamb and goat’s meat, but avoid pork because it is prohibited in their culture and religion.
Whatever people’s food preferences are, it is important to point out that eating, like everything else we do, should be done in moderation. Eating too little may not be preferable to most people, but it brings less problems than eating too much – which leads to obesity and illness.
Clearly, food cab be our friend or our foe. To stay healthy, we must find out how we can use food to our advantage, in combination with regular physical exercise, avoidance of vices like smoking and drinking alcohol, reducing stress, and keeping a positive attitude toward life.
